Photocatalytic element for decomposing hydrogen-containing compounds comprises a thin photocatalytic layer of binder-free photosemiconductor material on a support with an open pore structure. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of the photocatalytic element by forming the photocatalytic layer on the support by plasma-assisted vacuum coating; (2) device for decomposing hydrogen-containing compounds, comprising at least one element (1) as above and a light source (2) in a housing (3) having an inlet (4) for a liquid or gas containing the hydrogen-containing compounds and an outlet (5) for gaseous decomposition products; (3) process for decomposing hydrogen-containing compounds using the above device.
