A titanium dioxide-containing coating or mixture for contact surfaces in purification of waste gases or waste water is a suspension of: (a) a bitumen emulsion; (b) hydrophobicized titanium dioxide; and also (c) hydrophobicized hydroxides, oxides and/or sulfates of alkali(ne earth) metals.
