Electrolyte for ceramic high temperature fuel cell (SOFC; solid oxide fuel cell), which is based on zirconium oxide partly or completely stabilized with yttrium or scandium, can be applied to electrodes by a wet ceramic process and densification by sintered and contains sintering additive (I) also contains sintering inhibitor (II). An Independent claim is also included for production of the electrolyte by: (a) applying the electrolyte material (III) to ceramic surfaces coated with electrodes and sintering using a wet chemical coating process for giving the electrodes intermediate layer(s) of 50 at.% electrode material and 50 at.% (III); (b) then applying (III) with addition of (I) and also (II) in an amount that does not impair the oxygen ion conductivity of the electrolyte, so that (I) causes densification and (II) prevents undesired grain enlargement during sintering.
