Sensor has a clock controlled sampling system for sampling a periodic sensor signal and a regulation device for adjustment of the threshold that divides the sampled values into positive and negative values. Accordingly the regulation device adjusts the height of the threshold so that the ratio of positive to negative values meets a preset ratio value that is optimized for the characteristic properties of the signaling system.
