Method in which the systolic blood pressure is determined by measuring the pulse transit time in the artery and the diastolic blood pressure is measured by application of a pressure to the artery using an inflatable sleeve (1) and the Riva-Rocci method. At the beginning of a monitoring cycle the unit is calibrated. The diastolic pressure is measured using two pressure cushions (2a, 2b) that are alternated to prevent tissue necrosis in the area of a continuously applied pressure cushion. Pressure measurement is automated using a control and evaluation unit. An Independent claim is also included for a corresponding device.
