Separation of an emulsion containing oil or grease from an aqueous mixture of oil/water or grease/water involves passing the emulsified medium over one or membranes. The oil/grease-free phase permeates through the membrane leaving behind an oil/grease-enriched phase, which is then surrendered to one or more coalescing filters on which the oil/grease droplets agglomerate. The phase produced by the coalescing filter is surrendered to a skimmer in which the oil/grease floats and is removed. Alternatively, the oil/grease-enriched phase is surrendered to a centrifugal separator. An Independent claim is included for an assembly for use in the above method, with a membrane filter operated in conjunction with a pump. the pump, membrane assembly and coalescent filter are operated in a loop, or in series with a centrifugal separator.
