Ultrafiltration (UF) has been successfully applied to separation of emulsified oil in waste streams from metallurgical industries to produce an effluent water that is acceptable for discharge to sewer systems (Pinto 1978). A major problem encountered in ultrafiltration system operation is membrane fouling resulted from concentration of solutes on the membrane surface forming a gel layer (concentration polarization). Fouling reduces effluent generation rate and effluent quality.
