The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for monitoring the efficiency of a three-way catalytic converter (70) arranged in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. For this purpose, a reference estimated value for the efficiency is first generated (shortly after a SO¶x¶ flushing process), which is based on a large number of data points which were determined for different temperatures of the device during normal driving conditions of the vehicle. A current estimate of the efficiency is then determined from numerous data points. The two estimates are compared to give a measure of the reduction in efficiency of the catalyst (70) due to sulfation.
