The carrier has a rigid cross strut with ends sliding in roof-mounted guide rails, and with rollers acting with tracks on the rails to prevent strut jamming. The strut (3) has a roller (4,4') aligned to the neighboring guide rail (1,1') at each of its ends. The rollers are positioned opposite to each other, are connected non-turnable, and are in friction or positive engagement with the associated roller track (8,8') via interlocking profiles (9,9'). The rollers are spring-loaded (15,15') into engagement with the tracks, and there is a grip (14) to release the locking engagement.
