A reactor (1) generates hydrogen-rich gas (10) from a carbon-based material (9) having an allothermic heated fluidized layer (2). The reactor has a number of horizontal heating tubes (3) extending through the entire width of the fluidized layer. An Independent claim is also included for the generation of hydrogen-rich gas from carboniferous raw materials. Preferred Features: The heating pipes are parallel and may also be arranged arrayed in rectangular or triangular patterns. The pipes are heated internally by the combustion of gas (4) with air. The temperature distribution within the fluidized layer is adjusted by the pipe (3) arrangement.
