Tuning device for use in tuning a process regulator (12) that uses a set value and a process variable to generate a process regulation signal. The tuning device comprises the following: a first assembly for generation of an error signal representing the difference between the set value and the process variable; and amplification-adaptation assembly (20); and a second assembly (16) for monitoring the process variable to determine if the process variable oscillates and if so changes the amplification to prevent the variable from oscillating. An Independent claim is made for a process regulator with an inventive tuning device that controls a process variable so that it remains essentially equal to a set value. The regulator adapts the regulation amplification, reset and rate based on a model-free adaptation.
