The method involves detecting the surrounding situation and the actual vehicle situation before and during automatic braking, determining a first hazard lever for continued deceleration and a second hazard level for unbraked travel depending on the situations and deciding by comparing the hazard levels whether the deceleration devices remain activated or are deactivated. AN Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for automatic control of vehicle deceleration device.
