A process for the production of Guerbet acids comprises reaction of a Guerbet alcohol in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst to form a Guerbet aldehyde followed by oxidation with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture to form the corresponding carboxylic acid. A process for the production of Guerbet acids of formula (I) comprises reaction of a Guerbet alcohol of formula (II) in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst to form a Guerbet aldehyde of formula (III) followed by oxidation with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture to form the corresponding carboxylic acid.
