Apparatus for electrolytically decomposing water into hydrogen and oxygen comprises a Hofmann decomposition device containing an electrolyte solution made of water laced with acid; and an energy source to supply current to the decomposition device. The direct current is obtained from solar energy. Preferred Features: A direct current generator is used to produce the direct current which is driven by at least one vapor turbine. The apparatus further comprises a cooling device for cooling and storing the hydrogen produced on electrolysis; a water boiler (200) filled with water for producing water vapor using solar energy; and an optical lens (102) for focusing sunlight onto the boiler. A computer-controlled hydraulic device (300) for positioning the lens consists of an optical sensor element (104), a hydraulic actuator element (106) and a computer-controlled regulating and control device (108).
