Illuminating unit comprises an LED as light source which emits primary radiation in the region of 380-420 nm. The radiation is partially or completely converted into longer wavelength radiation using luminescent materials which are subjected to the primary radiation. The luminescent materials are emitted in the broad band and originate from the class of (europium (Eu), manganese (Mn))-coactivated halo-phosphates of formula: M5(PO4)3Cl, F): (Eu2+, Mn2+) M = strontium (Sr), calcium (Ca) or barium (Ba). Preferred Features: The cation is Sr which can be partially (up to 40 mol.%) replaced with Ba and/or Ca. The anion is chlorine (Cl) which can be partially (up to 10 mol.%) replaced by fluorine (F). The ratio of Mn: Eu is 8 to 4, preferably 5.5 to 6.5.
