The clamp for the fabric workpiece, at a sewing machine, has a release system with a control to move the clamp. When the pedal is in a neutral position, the fabric clamp is shifted into a center setting between a fabric press position and an uppermost position. When the pedal is moved forwards and depressed, the clamp is lifted in proportion to the level of pressure applied in depressing the pedal. When the pedal is moved backwards and depressed, the clamp is moved into the fabric press position and the control starts running the sewing machine.
