The suction valve assembly (10) of a piston compressor has an inertia valve (16), which has a valve plate in contact with a valve seat (14) on the piston (6) and opens and closes a suction passage (8), and a retaining rod extending from the rear side of the valve plate and entering the suction passage and provided with several guide slots evenly spaced in the circumferential direction. Guide pins (18) which are fastened to the piston slide in the guide slots to limit the degree of opening of the valve plate.
