Method for estimating the shape of a hearing filter by determination of coefficients of a filter model. Accordingly a threshold masking level is determined based on a tone that represents a given value of the hearing threshold of a subject summed at a given frequency. The invention also relates to a corresponding device with a tone generation element for generation of a fixed frequency tone, a tone level adjustment element, a noise generation element, a noise adjuster and a notch adjustment mechanism.
