The rail segment has two tubular sections (2,4) fastened on a spacer element (10) with an adjustable distance (a) between the axes (3,5) of the tubes. One of the tubular sections (2) is inseparably fixed on the spacer element and the other (4) detachably fastened to it. The one tubular section of one rail segment is fitted with clearance on the other tubular section of an adjacent rail segment. The tubular sections of adjacent rail segments forming a plug-in connection are secured by clamping screws (30). An independent claim is included for steps with a center rail for the fastening of the step elements.
