A liquid gas fuelled lighter has a safety mechanism, e.g. making it difficult for a child to operate, in which the thumb wheel (7) axis has a slot mounting. This requires the user to push the thumb wheel forward and downwards to produce a spark from the flint and at the same time pressing down on a gas release controls (5) with the pad of the thumb. The spring pressure of the thumb wheel mounting is not sufficiently strong to generate a spark if the wheel is turned without any downwards pressure.
