The tow hitch coupling for a vehicle trailer (12) has a coupling (14) which engages an opposing coupling (18) of the tow vehicle (16). The trailer tow hitch section has a gas filled envelope (20) which extends beyond the trailer tow hitch in the direction of the towed vehicle. The gas volume can be connected via a hose to a warning indicator.
