A method for applying connecting fittings to a workpiece, e.g. a vehicle body shell, has a sensor system fitted to the operating tools and moved by robotics. The operating tools are brought into close proximity with their operating positions and the shape and position of the workpiece is compared with reference patterns. The final positioning of the tools w.r.t. the workpiece is via a simple shift control with repeated relative measurements until the optimum position is reached. The actual position measurements are via simple triangulation. No calibrated sensors are required. The automated processes include stamping and pressing.
