The bed has a slatted mattress (3) which can slide along its frame. A separate head rest (8) is mounted on L-shaped levers (12, 14), the lever (14) nearest the foot end being operated by a piston (17) forming part of a linear adjuster and attached to it by a connecting plate (18). This allows the headrest to be tilted while the mattress simultaneously slides towards the head end of the bed.
