The system for indicating when vegetables are cooked comprises a hollow shaft (5) fitted through the lid (2) of a cooking pot (1). This carries a blade (12) at its lower end which rests on the vegetables. As they cook the cutter sinks until a collar (9) on the shaft seals the opening (10) through which the shaft passes. Steam then passes up the shaft and out through a pipe (6), causing a whistling sound.
