The signal device has a pipe (5) which is movable vertically within an opening (4) in the cooking pan lid (2) and which is fitted with a knife (11) at its bottom end, provided with a number of blades (12), resting on the vegetables being cooked in the pan (1) and cutting through the vegetables when these are sufficiently cooked. The top end of the pipe has a whistle (6), coupled to the interior of the pan via the pipe and a stopper (14) for closing the pipe end, a side opening (13) in the pipe allowing steam to pass through the pipe for blowing the whistle, when the pipe drops upon the blades cutting through the vegetables.
