In the prodn. of a mono- or multi-capillary element, structure or system by drawing a bundle of glass tubes, a peripheral face of defined shape is obtd. by (a) drawing using a cylindrical or polygonal preform formed by hermetic sealing of a glass tube bundle; (b) constricting the bundle by exposure to reduced pressure; and (c) moving the heated glass mass up and down in the region of the bulb-shaped section in dependence on the shaping of the upper or lower part of the element and in accordance with the defined shape of the peripheral face. During forming of the cylindrical or polygonal part, the constriction after heating is = 10-15% of the total cross-sectional area of the bundle before forming. The reduced pressure, in the temp. interval Th to Tk is 0.8-0.1 kg./sq.cm. and the glass surface temp., on leaving the furnace, is = 2T, where Th is the starting temp. of loss of glass brittleness and Tk is the temp. of glass fluidity. Also claimed is an appts. for controlled deflection of radiation.
