A cam shaft mounts at least one fuel injection cam (4) and at least one valve cam (3) controlling opening of an engine valve (5). Closing of the valve is controlled from the valve cam by an arrangement which may be a throttle valve (9). The valve cam preferably has peaks which open the valve after rotation through the same crank angle after fuel injection in either direction of rotation.
