The laser acts as pump for parametric wave generation within small sized semiconductor block. The semiconductor laser comprises at least two layers (2,3) of non-linear optical material as well as a quantum well situated within one of the layers of the non-linear optical material. The thicknesses and the optical indices of these two layers are such that the wave guide formed by these two layers offers a modal phase tuning condition for the process of parametric fluorescence. This process takes place between the wave pump emitted by the quantum well and the parametric conversion waves. The mode of the wave pump is not situated on the fundamental mode of the wave guide. The quantum well is not situated in the layer which has the higher optical refractive index. Alternative configurations may include more than two non-linear layers.
