Ink beam printing using colour enhancement in black areas

A method of operating an ink jet printing mechanism (10) to print onto a printable surface (16) an image having a solid black portion (86) occupying a selected region, and a color portion (84) abutting the black portion. The method comprises printing a first plurality of color ink dots of a first color onto the selected region and after printing the color ink dots, printing black ink onto the selected region to generate the solid black portion.
