Method for execution of an extended application (DAP) in a portable electronic device such as a chip card (CP) in which if there is enough available memory a part of the application, such as a software component stored in an external library is called by the object in order to load it in memory. If there is not sufficient memory the state of a preceding application element is stored in memory and then it is deleted in order to free up memory for the software component to be run. The invention also relates to a corresponding portable electronic device, especially a chip card with a microcontroller and means (DAP) for describing the elements of an application essentially executed in the card.
