The spectacle lens is drilled with the aid of a rotary drill bit (15) moving vertically above a base (11) with a plate (20) that can be rotated about a fixed point (21) not aligned with the axis (16) of the drill bit. During operation the lens, held in a clamp (55), can be moved horizontally relative to the drill to make a notch in its edge, and set in a fixed position for making a hole adjacent to the notch.
