Functionalization of a solid support having hydroxy or hydride functions on its surface comprises attaching a bifunctional reagent carrying protected carboxy groups, then deprotection. Functionalization of a solid support having hydroxy or hydride functions on its surface comprises covalent fixation, through (hydro)silylation, of a compound (I), then deprotecting the carboxy groups that have not been deprotected during coupling. The new features are: (i) coupling is at 50 - 200 deg C using (I) in which A is monofunctional; and (ii) the deprotected carboxy groups, and any unreacted hydroxy/hydride groups that have not reacted with (I), are passivated by silanization. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) functionalized supports prepared by the new method; (2) immobilizing biomolecules (A) on the supports of (1); and (3) supports prepared by (2). A-X-COOR (I) A = group that allows fixation to hydroxy or hydride functions; R = carboxy protecting group; X = 2 - 18C linear or branched hydrocarbyl chain, saturated or unsaturated and optionally interrupted by one or more of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen.
