Production of trans-1,4-polybutadiene comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organocobalt compound (I), an organoaluminum compound (II), a p-alkylphenol (III) and an o-phenylphenol (IV). The (III):(II) molar ratio is 1.2-1.8:1 and the (IV):(II) molar ratio is 0.7-1.3:1. (II) is reacted with (IV) before being contacted with (I).
