Artificial breathing device has means for measuring the flow rates of inspiration and expiration gases with a differential pressure gauge having at least two pressure tap points arranged in the gas flow path allowing determination of the total pressure and the static pressure of the gas, these two pressures being connected to a differential pressure sensor during inspiration and expiration phases. The pressure sensor delivers an electrical signal proportional to the pressure difference. An Independent claim is made for a method for determining the flow rate of a gas in a patient artificial respiration device in which the determined differential pressure is used to determine gas flow rates.
