Device for detecting defects (1) in a wooden object (2) has friction means for causing local excitation of the surface (3) of the object. Advantageously vibrating brushes (4) are used to generate the excitation. Detection means comprise a microphone (7) placed near to the brushes or accelerometers coupled to the brushes. The object is moved at constant speed relative to the detection device by transport means (11). The invention also relates to a corresponding method.
