Cultivated Cichorium plant, useful for production of hybrid seeds and plants, has a male sterility allele at locus MS, linked to specific markers

Cultivated Cichorium plant (A), or its parts, the genome of which includes a male sterility allele at locus MS that, when present homozygously, imparts the male sterility phenotype, is new. The MS locus is linked to markers AFLP E44/M76 and E46/M75 in the strain deposited as NCIMB 41116. Independent claims are also included for: (1) introgression of male sterility into a cultivated variety of Cichorium by crossing it with (A); (2) use of markers (M) linked to the MS locus for introducing male sterility into cultivated Cichorium; and (3) use of (M) for detecting (A).
