Compost production comprises charging a bioreactor with finely divided lignocellulosic waste, adding nitrogenous liquid waste to give a carbon/nitrogen ratio of 25-40, adjusting the water content to 60-70 % and the pH to 5.2-5.5, stirring the mixture, continuously aerating the mixture and stirring it at regular intervals, and allowing the compost to stand with access to ambient air and weekly stirring. An Independent claim is also included for compost produced as above.
