The coupling comprises a packing seal (5) enclosing an end portion of the two tubes (1,2). A slit sleeve (4) encloses the packing seal and clamping means (6) radially clamp the sleeve around the packing. The packing seal consists of a circular thin walled metal part (8) with two collars (8a,8b) at its end. The sleeve has two internal grooves (4a,4b) for receiving the collars having a depth less than the radial dimension of the collars. The base of the grooves then acts on the periphery of the collars to cause a contraction of the circular part end zones (8c,8d) and bring the end zones into sealed contact with the end portions of the two tubes over their entire circumference when the sleeve is clamped.
