Iron-based alloy used in the production of a valve seat ring in an internal combustion engine contains alloying additions of carbon, chromium, silicon, molybdenum, nickel and optionally cobalt, vanadium, niobium, manganese and tungsten
Iron-based alloy comprises (in wt.%) 0.2-4.0 carbon, 3.0-9.0 chromium, 1.0-3.0 silicon, 0-6.0 cobalt, 5.0-15.0 molybdenum, 3.0-15.0 nickel, 0-6.0 vanadium, 0-4.0 niobium, 0-4.0 manganese, 0-6.0 tungsten, and a balance of iron. An Independent claim is also included for a part for an internal combustion engine component made from the above alloy. Preferred Features: The part is produced by casting the above alloy, build-up welding with the alloy in the wire or powder form or forming the alloy using powder metallurgy. The alloy comprises (in wt.%) 2.2-2.6 carbon, 5.0-8.0 chromium, 1.5-2.5 silicon, 5.0-15.0 molybdenum, 6.0-10.0 nickel, 1.0-3.0 vanadium, 1.0-2.0 niobium, 0-0.8 manganese, 0.5-2.5 tungsten, and a balance of iron.
