A recent report, MG/D/441/70, which combined the information contained in three earlier reports, MG/D/359/66, MG/D/590/68 and MG/DA/413/69, describes work carried out to derive factors to correct for interelement effects. The report was discussed by the Chemical Analysis Committee of the Metallurgy Group and it agreed that a 'simplified working guide' would be a suitable corollory to the report. In the course of preparation of the consequent report it was found possible to modify the original procedure and this modification is described within this present report. Calibration curves for niobium, titanium and molybdenum were obtained, to cover the determination of these elements in a wide range of commercial alloys. Calibration curves for manganese and silicon were also prepared, but these require a line overlap correction in the case of manganese and an empirical correction in the case of silicon. Interelement effects were shown to occur in the cases of nickel and chronium, but a correction procedure was developed for use in the determination of these elements. (Author)
