Cosmetic or dermatological composition containing a vanilla extract is used to protect the skin against superoxide radicals or to limit the appearance of sunburn cells. Independent claims are also included for: (1) cosmetic or dermatological composition containing 0.1-30% vanilla extract and a vehicle or excipient; (2) cosmetic treatment for protecting the skin against free radicals, comprising topical application of a vanilla tahitensis extract; (3) production of a vanilla extract by grinding a pod of Vanilla tahitensis or V. fragrans, extracting the ground material with a liquid solvent, macerating or reextracting the residue, and recombining the different extracts.
