An encoding method for transport format comparison indicator (TFCI) bits for use in asynchronous CDMA is disclosed. TFCI information bits for the downlink shared channel (DSCH) are generated in a first TFCI generator 450, and TFCI information bits for a dedicated channel (DCH) assigned to a particular user are generated in a second TFCI generator 455. A first encoder 400 encodes the DSCH TFCI information bits to produce DSCH coded TFCI bits, and the second encoder 405 encodes the DCH information bits to produce DCH coded TFCI bits. The encoder outputs are passed through a multiplexer 410 to produce a 32 bit TFCI word. Each encoder generates a 32 bit signal from the input TFCI information bits, which it then punctures (using a mask pattern appropriate for the particular information bit ratio) to produce coded TFCI bits. When k DSCH TFCI information bits are input to the first encoder, 10-k DCH TFCI information bits must be input to the second encoder, where k is an integer between 1 and 9. In a first embodiment the first encoder outputs 3k+1 bits and the second encoder outputs 3(10-k)+1 bits. In another embodiment the first encoder outputs 3k bits and the second encoder outputs 3(10-k)+2 bits.
