The present application discloses a receiver for extracting k Transport Format Combination Indicator (TFCI) bits from 3k+1 coded TFCI bits for Dedicated Channel (DCH), and for extracting 10-k TFCI bits from 3(10-k) +1 coded TFCI bits for Downlink Shared Channel (DSCH), where k is an integer between 1 and 9 inclusive. The method involves using mask patterns associated with the value of k to zero pad the 3k+1 and 3(10-k)+1 bit streams to produce two 32-bit streams, and then decoding each of the 32-bit streams. The receiver of the present application is complementary to the transmitter of GB 2379368. In an alternative embodiment there may be 3k coded TFCI bits for DCH and 3(10-k)+2 coded TFCI bits for DSCH.
