PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical member and an optical apparatus having excellent optical characteristics by using a graded index lens.;SOLUTION: The composition of a base glass for the optical element contains boron oxide as an essential component, and thallium. Therefore, the base glass has a low melting temperature and is excellent in moldability, and a uniform glass body can be manufactured from the base glass. The graded index lens having a refractive index distribution required in the optical design, a large effective visual field, and excellent weatherability can be manufactured by bringing the glass body into contact with a molten salt of an alkali metal so as to exchange ions. Further, it is possible to supply the optical member and the optical apparatus having excellent optical characteristics by using the graded index lens.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
