PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the activity of a photocatalyst consisting of a visible light responsive transition metal nitride and a transition metal oxynitride.;SOLUTION: The photocatalyst activity improving method comprises heating, in the presence of ammonia having a pressure higher than 0.2 MPa (mega Pascal) and at a temperature of 300°C or higher, the photocatalyst consisting of the transition metal nitride and the transition metal oxynitride containing at least one transition metal, especially the photocatalyst selected from LaTaON2, MTaO2N (M: an alkaline earth metal selected from Ca, Sr, and Ba), Ta3N5, TaON, LaTiO2N, TiNxOyFz, and MNbO2N (M: an alkaline earth metal selected from Ca, Sr, and Ba).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
