PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for depositing a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance under high-speed heavy cutting conditions on a surface of a cutting tool.;SOLUTION: In the method for depositing hard coating layer, the cutting tool is freely rotatably attached onto a rotary table in an arc ion plating system so that the tool is eccentric from the central axis of the rotary table, Al-Ti alloy having a relatively high Al content as one of evaporation sources and Ti-Al alloy having a relatively high Ti content as the other evaporation source are arranged opposite to each other across the rotary table, arcing is generated between both evaporation sources and anode electrodes arranged side by side in the respective evaporation sources, a gaseous oxygen atmosphere is formed as the reaction atmosphere in the arc ion plating system at the point of the time the cutting tool comes nearest the evaporation source having the relatively high Al content on one side and a gaseous nitrogen atmosphere is formed as the reaction atmosphere in the system at the point of the time the cutting tool comes nearest the evaporation source having the relatively high Ti content on the the other side.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
