PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform title extraction from a document image at high speed, while keeping accuracy.;SOLUTION: A character region is extracted from the document image, and line information is extracted from the character region. In order to acquire a title candidate by extracting information similar to a title from the line information, lines are narrowed to those having a close relation with the title, when extracting the line information from the character region. Namely, only the specific number of lines fewer than the total number of lines is extracted from one region, while removing a line far from the head by assuming that the title is not included therein, and only the extracted lines are transferred to the next processing (secondary extraction processing).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
