PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a γ-glutamylcysteine synthase, a gene encoding the enzyme, an expression vector containing the gene and a transformant in which the vector is transduced and to provide a method for mass-producing glutathione utilizing the transformant.;SOLUTION: The γ-glutamylcysteine synthase is separated from Hansenula polymorpha which is a methanol assimilating yeast and associated with glutathione biosynthesis. The gene encodes the synthase. The expression vector in which the vector is transduced is provided. The glutathione is mass-produced by utilizing the transformant. Since heavy metal resistance and cell propagating functions are recovered and increased together with glutathione biosynthesis functions when the gene is transferred into a glutathione biosynthesis-deficient mutant, the gene can usefully be used for heavy metal adsorption, production of a coenzyme and production of a hepatic function enhancer and a detoxifying agent utilizing the glutathione.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
