PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a baby hard disk unit to carry out processes of optimization/inspection, such as writing of servo information, by itself by transplanting the know-how possessed by a parent hard disk unit to the baby hard disk unit connected to the parent hard disk unit. PSOLUTION: The hard disk unit includes a ROM 21 in which the basic program for accepting a growth program for performing processing of optimization by itself is stored, and an MPU 20 which accepts the growth program based on the basic program stored into the ROM 21 and carries out the optimization processing by the accepted growth program by itself. The basic program stored into the ROM 21 recognizes that the processing of optimization is not carried out by itself if the information intrinsic to the hard disk unit is stored into an EEPROM (electrically erasable and programable ROM) 22 or servo information is written in a magnetic disk 11.
