PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for distinguishing objects that detects approach of a human body using a noncontact type electrostatic capacitance sensor.;SOLUTION: When a human body approaches the periphery of the electrostatic capacitance sensor 1, an electric charge level as a whole detected by the electrostatic capacitance sensor 1 is reduced since the human body earthed to the ground is charged potentially negatively through the ground, and since the body is regarded as a conductor connected in parallel with an electrostatic capacitance portion and a resistance portion. When a floating body other than the human body approaches to the periphery of the electrostatic capacitance sensor 1, the electric charge level as a whole detected by the electrostatic capacitance sensor 1 is increased since the floating body other than the human body is charged potentially positively because it is not earthed to the ground, and since the floating body is regarded as a dielectric comprising only the electrostatic capacitance portion. A distinguishing part 5 distinguishes whether the body is a human body or not, based on a difference in the charge levels detected by the electrostatic capacitance sensor 1.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
